If the Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice reads "Smog Certification Required", you may take your vehicle to any smog check station. If the notice reads, "You must take your vehicle to a Test Only Station for a required Certification", you must take your vehicle to a Test Only Station. At VR Smog Check Test Only, we perform all types of smog tests. However, we cannot perform repairs. If your vehicle does not pass the test. You can take your vehicle to a licensed Smog Test and Repair Station. We have the list for all the stations in your area.

If your vehicle does not pass the test, you may qualify for financial assistance. To obtain an application and find out if you qualify, go to www.BreathEasier.ca.gov (1-800-952-5210)

Please take your Vehicle Registration Renewal Notice to the smog check station. The station will use this form to send the vehicle's test result or smog certification electronically to DMV.

Liability Insurance. Current evidence of liability insurance issued by a company authorized by California Department of Insurance to do business in this state must be provided to the Department to renew the registration of the motor vehicle. If evidence of Liability Insurance is requested on the front of your Registration Renewal Notice, you must provide it with payment of renewal fees.

You must pay fees by the due date even if you cannot provide smog certification and/or evidence of insurance.

Transfer of ownership. According to state law, it is the seller's responsibility to get the smog check in the event of transfer of ownership. Transfer of ownership between immediate family members does not require a new smog check to transfer title. Some DMV offices are not aware of this, so you might have to let them know.
